Over the past several decades, interest in recycling and reusing a wide range of materials has grown. Build project managers, construction contractors, and demolition teams need to be aware of the benefits that can be gained with recycled aggregate concrete and other such materials.
As we head into 2021, one thing is certain—the costs of raw materials are on the rise while at the same time construction projects have not yet fully resumed their pre-COVID levels. As a contractor or stakeholder in a construction project, one needs to be aware of these increases and the impacts they can have on project costs.

According to the AGC (Associated General Contractors) 2020 price index, the costs for lumber and plywood rose 36.1% for 2020. Concrete products, in general, saw a 2.6% overall, with precast concrete products experiencing a 4.6% increase.1
Granted, the increase in concrete products may not seem that significant. Yet, the slight increase could make a huge difference in the profits left over after completing a construction project. As the ‘21 season shapes up, the costs of aggregate, concrete, and asphalt will continue to skyrocket even further.
There were already some things in play before the pandemic. Combined with the pandemic, it has created a situation where prices went up and are anticipated to continue to increase through 2021.
For starters, sand pits and quarries were already facing challenges at securing a steady supply of materials. In some cases, there were changes in certain state’s regulations regarding permitting, making it more difficult to replenish reserves. In other cases, the sites are simply depleted of certain materials, with no estimated time frame when they will be replenished, partly due to COVID.
Next, new construction projects are taking shape in more rural areas. Since the projects are further from material resources, delivery costs are more. Therefore, the total costs of materials are more.
The quality of aggregate has become more important at certain quarries. These quarries have restricted the use of certain aggregate materials to asphalt- and concrete-quality standards. As a result, their capacities of aggregate materials were reduced, creating an imbalance between supply and demand.
One thing we have noticed is more and more contractors and project managers are investing in portable micro crushers to use on job sites. The micro crushers can be used to recycle old concrete, asphalt, granite, limestone, basalt, and pebbles found on a site.
Contractors and project managers can take advantage of recycling materials to create the base materials required for fill. By doing so, they reduce the amount of new material they need to purchase to complete the project.

Aggregates are extremely useful materials for concrete projects. They make up around 60% to 75% of the volume of concrete, and also help determine the functional properties and proportions of this common material. However, as most construction professionals learn early on, not all aggregates are alike.
Aggregates can be composed of sand, gravel, crushed rock, and a variety of other geological materials. These materials can vary significantly in shape, texture, density, and ability to absorb moisture. The different characteristics of aggregate means that it is vitally important to choose carefully in determining which types are to be used in any given construction project.
Aggregates have a very wide range of applications—sidewalks, railway tracks, roads, French drains, etc.—and using the wrong kind for a particular job can have disastrous consequences. For instance, aggregates that are best suited as filling materials may not be acceptable for load-bearing applications.
It is also important to prepare the aggregate properly before deploying it, as it is unlikely to be in usable condition in whatever state it is found. This generally involves crushing it, with help from equipment specially designed for this purpose, into smaller materials that fall within a specific range of sizes and dimensions. But before aggregate can be crushed, there are a few steps that should be taken to ensure best results.
Broadly speaking, preparing aggregate involves two stages: processing and beneficiation.
Processing - This is the process of crushing, washing, and screening aggregates to ensure that they conform to standards of size and cleanliness.
Beneficiation - This is a quality-control process that involves separating aggregate according to density and other characteristics. Additional crushing may be involved.
Here we’ll focus on the first stage: processing.
Although aggregate can be made from many types of geological materials, it is common to classify it into two general types: fine and coarse. Because construction applications often require one specific type, or a mixed concrete aggregate that has a precise proportion of both, it is important to be familiar with the distinctions between these types.
Fine aggregate - Aggregate particles of this size will pass through a 4.75 mm (no. 4) sieve but not a 0.075 mm sieve. It commonly derives from sand and crushed stone.
Coarse aggregate - Aggregate particles of this size will not pass through a 4.75 mm (no. 4) sieve. It commonly derives from gravel and crushed stone. Coarse aggregate is often grouped in single-size classifications of 10 mm, 12.5 mm, 16 mm, 20 mm, 40 mm, and 63 mm.
Creating the right kind of aggregate for a specific purpose requires high-quality crushing and processing equipment that can produce particles that fall within an acceptable range of specifications.
If you plan to crush materials in order to turn them into aggregate, it is important to determine in advance where this procedure is to be carried out. If you are engaged in a demolition project, will you crush the materials onsite or send them off to another location? Transporting materials to and from a site can be expensive as well as time-consuming.
One way to solve this problem is to bring portable crushing equipment onsite for processing stone products and similar materials. This is especially useful for cases where materials torn out of an existing site can serve as filling materials for a new construction project. With portable equipment, there’s no need to go through the wasteful hassle of transporting materials offsite, turning them into aggregate, and bringing it back to the original site.

In addition, the washing of aggregate is often an important part of the post-crushing sorting process.

Turning geological or old construction materials into aggregate form involves one or more crushing machines. Often it is necessary to utilize multiple machines, each with the capacity to process materials of a particular dimension. Machines should be designated primary (first), secondary (second), or tertiary (third), according to their position in the processing sequence.
Primary crushing machines—often jaw crushers—handle the initial raw materials; secondary machines—often cone crushers—reduce the size of the particles; and tertiary machines (when necessary) produce the final crushed aggregate product. At every stage, it is a good practice to load the materials into the crusher evenly and continuously; a portable feeder is especially helpful here.
Be careful when putting materials into a crushing machine—it can be damaged by objects that are larger than it is supposed to process. If you are not certain whether materials are suitable for a particular machine, stay on the safe side by breaking them into smaller pieces prior to putting them inside the crusher.

Demolition projects routinely result in large amounts of waste products as foundations are pulled up and walls are torn down. These waste materials are known as construction and demolition (C&D) debris. C&D materials are often heavy and bulky, which means that the process of removing and disposing of them properly can be both expensive and labor-intensive.
Figuring out how to dispose of demolition waste in the most efficient way possible, while complying with all relevant laws and regulations, is an essential part of any renovation project. Navigating this waste management task properly enables you to save money and reduce the burden of construction debris on the environment.
There are many kinds of C&D materials, just as there are many types of materials that go into constructing buildings or civil engineering projects. Common C&D materials include the following:

All this material must be dealt with as part of the task of clearing away a demolition site.
The primary way to classify C&D waste is by dividing it into hazardous and non-hazardous types. This is important because, legally, hazardous waste cannot be simply taken to a recycling facility or treated with the same procedures that would be acceptable with non-hazardous waste.
Common types of hazardous waste include lead, silica, asbestos, and mercury. Any materials that contain substances of this nature (e.g., fluorescent bulbs, smoke detectors) should be considered hazardous. Check the EPA website for a longer list of harmful construction materials.
The exact procedure for disposing of hazardous construction waste varies according to the laws of the area where the project was carried out. In general, disposing of hazardous waste should be left to companies with specific experience in handling these materials.
When it comes to demolition projects, the best strategy is to figure out how to minimize the amount of solid waste material that needs to be taken to a landfill site. Aside from being merely wasteful, putting C&D debris in a landfill burdens the environment and—depending on the type of material—can violate recycling laws.
In the construction industry, it is customary to speak of the need to “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” This refers to three distinct activities involved in construction debris disposal.
Attempting to reduce the amount of waste material in construction projects can save money and reduce negative environmental impacts. This is often referred to as “source reduction,” and it is mainly associated with the design phase of construction—that is, calculating how to use as little material as possible when building structures. In the demolition phase, it takes the form of deconstruction, which is the activity of carefully taking apart a site so at least some of the material can be reused.
Deconstruction is more time-consuming than a standard demolition, but it can save money in the long run. Buildings that are best suited for deconstruction are those that are in structurally good condition, preferably with wood frames. Buildings of this type can sometimes be completely deconstructed so that virtually all of their materials are reusable.
Reusing material collected from demolished buildings is the second step of the process. Not all demolition materials can be reused, but quite a few can be. Reusable materials include:
If carefully removed from the site, these materials can be easily used in a new construction project.
In addition, concrete waste from demolition sites can be reused by transforming it into aggregate for base materials. This is where a portable rock crusher comes in handy.
What happens to demolition waste when there is no immediate use for it? In many cases, it can be recycled. Wood and metal are among the most commonly recycled materials, as they can be turned into a wide variety of products. Be sure to work with reuse centers that are compliant with all applicable laws for recycling of C&D.
It is only when none of the above options is practical that you should resort to hiring a dumpster rental to transport waste materials to a landfill.
